Fire crews had to contend with strong wind gusts while fighting large two blazes in Canterbury last night.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokeswoman said one fire engine and three tankers were called to a blaze near Jollies Rd in Southbridge at 8.10pm.

She said crews from Southbridge, Lincoln and Leeston extinguished the blaze, which covered about 300m of vegetation.

"We had strong wind come through about that time."

Two crews were later called to a tree on fire near Lake Rd in Leeston about 8.40pm.

A fire engine from Leeston and a tanker from Dunsandel attended the blaze, which spread across about 150m.

The fire erupted after a controlled burn got into a hedge due to the wind. It was contained it within about 30min.
