A former St Bede’s College staff member charged with historical sexual offending against students has appeared in the Christchurch District Court this morning.

The accused man was granted interim name suppression and remanded on bail to re-appear in court via audio-visual link on March 10, the New Zealand Herald reported.

However, the man's case for continued name suppression will now be heard by the High Court at a later date, the Herald reported.

Court documents show the alleged offending took place between January 1997 and December 2000 against two students who boarded at St Bede’s College.

The Herald reported the man is facing nine charges of indecent assault and sexual violation on boys aged 12 to 16 and charges of indecent assault on a man/boy over 16.

Detective Senior Sergeant Karen Simmons previously said police believe the man targeted students "boarding at the school during this time".

Simmons urged any other victims of abuse at St Bede's College to come forward.

"We understand how distressing it can be to report or talk about offending of this nature, but we have officers and detectives dedicated to these cases and to providing a safe space to report offending in confidence," she said.

"We want to thank those survivors who have spoken to us already and will continue our work to pursue justice for them."

St Bede’s College is an all-boys integrated Roman Catholic school in Papanui, Christchurch.

In a statement earlier this month, the school recognised and acknowledged "historic sexual abuse may have taken place at St Bede’s College".

Possible victims can call Detective Senior Sergeant Karen Simmons at the Christchurch Central Police Station on 03 363 7400, or report it online using file number 230122/3143.
