The driver who reversed a school bus to safety after a slip in 2022 has been elected to the Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū Banks Peninsula Community Board.

Jason Crew.

The final election result was declared on Monday.

Crew beat his opponent Keith Molloy by 439 votes to 239 to become the Akaroa representative.

The voter return was 47.7%. Crew is expected to be sworn in at the community board meeting on July 13.

In July 2022, the Akaroa Area School bus driver and pupils were caught up in a slip that closed the main road to Okains Bay.

With a flooded bank on one side and a steep drop on the other, Crew managed to back his school bus to safety.

At the time Crew said the incident "would have been quite spectacular if it wasn’t scary".

With two children unable to go home, Crew then drove back to Akaroa, got in his ute and drove a similar distance back in terrible conditions to get them to a place to stay for the night.
