A two-week-old female zebra foal has made her debut at Orana Wildlife Park in Christchurch.

The yet-to-be-named youngster was born two weeks ago and is thriving and already showing plenty of personality, Orana lead keeper of ungulates Kyleen Peterson said.

Peterson, who recently joined the Orana team from Oregon Zoo, said the arrival has been a highlight for the park staff.

"It’s fantastic to have a new baby and everyone is thrilled to welcome a beautiful girl. She’s feisty, very strong, and has been delighting us with playful zoomies around the habitat."

The foal underwent an initial veterinary and neonatal health check at just one day old.

Peterson said this included confirming her sex and taking blood samples to ensure she is successfully nursing and receiving vital immunoglobulins which are essential antibodies that help kick-start her immune system.

“Mum Asale has been fantastic from the very beginning,” says Peterson.

“She was immediately caring for and protecting her foal. The test results show the foal is feeding well and getting the nutrients she needs, which is wonderful news.”

The Park’s zebra herd has also adapted smoothly to the new arrival.

“Herbie, the foal’s older brother, is coming to terms with not being the youngest anymore and has been spending more time socialising with our other mare, Eve, which is a positive development for both of them.

"Meanwhile, Asale and her foal are taking everything in their stride.”

Visitors can catch a glimpse of the young filly as she explores her new surroundings. However, her welfare remains the top priority, Peterson said.

"Asale and her foal are given full choice over where they spend their time, whether that’s in the main habitat or in a quieter space.

"At this early stage, it’s critical that Asale has that agency as a new mother,” Kyleen explains.

"The arrival of this little foal has been a wonderful way to begin my time at Orana, and I’m sure visitors will absolutely adore meeting her."
