After an 18-month refurbishment, New World Fendalton has been transformed with the completion of the extensive revamp.
The upgrade has seen a complete re-design of the building, with the supermarket’s size increasing by 500 sq m.
The number of checkouts has been boosted along with an expanded range of products on offer.
Brothers James and Richard Turner are continuing their family legacy as third-generation owners and operators of New World Fendalton.
"It really has been a team effort, and to see our community enjoy the refurbished store has been incredibly rewarding," James said.
"It brings together the hard work of so many people."
Other new features include an ecostore refillery and a new butchery counter.
Energy-saving refrigeration and a daylight harvesting system to reduce electricity use has been installed in a bid to lower the store’s carbon footprint.
New World Fendalton has a strong family history.
The brothers’ great grandfather, Walter Turner, immigrated to Christchurch when he was 14-years-old and secured a job in a local grocery store, and eventually owned the store in 1936.
Walter’s son Jim - affectionately known as ‘Gentleman Jim’ - took over the store in 1961 and owned it up until his death in 2016.
Originally part of Fendalton Mall, the Memorial Ave store was owned by the Turner family since its opening until 1970. It was named Turners Grocers.
Richard believes Walter and Jim would be proud of the supermarket’s evolution and continuation of its characteristic family business charm.
“Supermarkets have changed a lot since the business opened back in the 1930s," Richard said.
"I think changes we have made will ensure we continue to provide a top-class shopping experience for decades to come, just like our grandfathers did before us."
James and Richard are carrying on the family legacy, continuing to be a mainstay of New Zealand’s grocery collective and an integral cornerstone of the western Christchurch community.
