Residents of two Christchurch suburbs are being advised to keep their cats inside after reports some have been killed or injured by dogs.

A resident posted on the Hornby Neighbourhood Watch Facebook group last week saying they spoke to a man who said his cat was eaten by dogs in Hei Hei, near Hornby.

Said the post: “Some guy drove past and was talking to my partner and some dogs on Tauiwi Cres has eaten his cat. Can’t remember if it was one or two dogs but this has happened in the last two hours. Just a heads up to make sure your fur babies come home tonight.”

The post was responded to by residents who have had similar experiences and others who urged people to lock their cats inside.

Someone commented with a screenshot of a post from another member of the Facebook group which said their neighbour’s cat was killed by two “loose dogs” around Parker St and Foremans Rd, Hornby.

The person who posted the screenshot said she had seen five posts about cats attacked by what she believes were the same dogs in the area.

Another comment said: “I honestly feel for the owners on both parts. My partner and I have decided with all the dogs that roam around Manurere St [Hei Hei] that we need to keep our kitten inside even when she grows up unless we are at home.”

The person who made the post said the number of cats going missing in the area “is just getting shocking.”

Christchurch City Council manages dog control issues across the city. A council spokesperson said it has not received any complaints regarding the incident.

However, four dog complaints had been received by Animal Management in the area over the last year, but only one was substantiated and the property was secured and a warning issued, the spokesperson said.
