Andrew Nuttall is the oldest played named in the New Zealand squad for the Over-50s Cricket World Cup.
Showing similar characteristics to a fine wine has seen Andrew Nuttall, John Garry, Dean Read and Kelvin Scott book a spot to the Over-50s Cricket World Cup in South Africa.

Nuttall, 62, is the oldest member of the squad and was part of the New Zealand team which contested the inaugural age group World Cup in Australia last year. It will be a first time appearance for Garry, Read and Scott.

All four were part of the Canterbury/Otago side which finished second at the over-50s inter-provincial tournament held in Christchurch over Labour Weekend. Also in the squad of 16 is former Canterbury and New

Zealand player Richard Petrie. He is the only former international in the side. However, a string of former stars are expected to feature at the World Cup.

“I’d heard some rumours Jonty Rhodes may be turning out for South Africa,” said Nuttall.

The Zimbabwe side are also expected to feature a trio of former internationals including Eddo Brandes who is remembered best for arguably cricket’s greatest ever sledge.

During a test against Australia in 2003 Glenn McGrath became frustrated at being unable to dismiss Brandes. McGrath then asked: “Why are you so fat?” to which Brandes replied: “Because every time I shag your wife she gives me a chocolate biscuit.”

New Zealand is one of 12 teams contesting the World Cup. They will play WestIndies, Australia, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Canada in their pool.

The tournament takes place from March 11-24.
