In a year when it was unable to hold its usual fundraising sales, the Regent Theatre has pulled out all the stops for a pre-Christmas book and gift sale this Friday and Saturday.

Book sale co-ordinator Alison Cunningham said the "Good as New" book and gift sale would feature the best nearly new books and toys, CDs and DVDs donated to the theatre this year.

"Since our 24 Hour Book Sale and Anything But Books Sale couldn’t go ahead this year, we have picked out the very best of the books and goods that have been donated to us," Mrs Cunningham said.

"Our aim is to help people get their Christmas all wrapped up, while having a nice event to round off the year."

Regent Theatre volunteers have made dozens of colourful Christmas stockings and a gift wrapping station will be available.

Mrs Cunningham and a team of volunteers have had assistance from Taskforce Green and community services workers to set up the sale and local Army Cadets will help with the clean-up afterwards.

"We are very grateful for that support," she said.

Funds raised through the "Good as New" gift and book sale will go towards the theatre’s running costs, in what has been a difficult year for the arts.

"We have been pleased to have had a busy November and a really good house at the weekend for Reid & Ruins — so things are looking up," she said.

Next year’s prospects were better, with bookings coming in for shows and Musical Theatre Dunedin planning to stage its postponed season of Les Miserables.

The "Good as New" book and gift sale will be held this Friday, December 4, from noon to 7pm, and Saturday, December 5, from 10am to 2pm, on the stage and in the stalls at the Regent Theatre. Entrance is from the Octagon.
