It all begins with a single piece.

The ubiquitous Lego brick, scourge of barefooted parents but source of limitless imagination for creative minds of all ages, will be seen in countless configurations as the Dunedin Brick Show makes a triumphant return this weekend.

Mind-bending imagination as well as many hours of careful construction will be showcased at the Edgar Centre, with exhibitors from across the country bringing their best work to the city.

Organiser Jacqui Hay said she was delighted to see the return of the event after being cancelled last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

As well as extraordinary brick displays there was a car racing ramp —"so kids can build and make cars to race down the ramp".

This year for the first time there is an interactive garden where people of all ages can create all sorts of flowers and insects to add to the garden.

Another big attraction is 2022 Lego Masters winner Jake Roos, a former University of Otago student who, along with Glenn Knight, took away the trophy in the first series of the popular television show.

Science educator Amadeo Enriquez Ballestero will be using bricks to create exciting demonstrations, and there will be a children’s speed-building competition.

Schools around Otago had also taken part in a stop-motion animation competition and the results will be screened, with the winner being given "the coveted gold brick", Mrs Hay said.

Funds raised from the show will support Dunedin Riding for the Disabled.

  • The Dunedin Brick Show 2022 is open this weekend from 10am to 5pm at the Edgar Centre.
