Dunedin Pride secretary Trak Gray said the aim of the club was to allow people to experiment with gender stereotypes.

"Creating a really safe, really affirming space for us to play and explore and break all the rules."

Gender was a social construct, they said.

"It is really hard to explore make-up and gender in isolation."

The make-up club might be a way to cultivate a drag scene or ballroom scene in Dunedin.

"Anything could come out of it, so this is kind of like the first step towards creating something in this space."

The aim was to establish a group that could meet on a regular basis.
