Stories from across the world will be heard in Dunedin next week as storytellers from the city’s diverse cultures step into the limelight.

Hosted by Dunedin City Library, the Around the World in 80 Tales — Cultural Bites festival is a mini version of the city’s popular annual storytelling event.

Dunedin Public Libraries events co-ordinator Kay Mercer said the main festival could not go ahead due to Covid-19, so some of the tellers gave presentations online.

"That was quite good, but there is no substitute for being there, so we decided to put together a smaller event for before Christmas," Ms Mercer said.

"It’s a good way to share some great stories, and to remind people of the mixture of cultures we have here in Dunedin."

The Cultural Bites festival, to be held next Tuesday, December 8, from 6pm at Dunedin City Library, will feature four stories told in person, plus videos from a broad array of countries and cultures.

The stories will be told in the teller’s original language, then repeated in English with live translation into NZ Sign Language by interpreter Brydee Strang.

"It’s wonderful how you can follow the stories while they are being told, even though they are in another language.

"It’s not just the stories, it’s the experience."

Along with the stories, the Cultural Bites festival will also offer audience members the chance to sample dishes from around the world.

Numbers are limited. Contact the library to book.
