Lyttelton Port Co. has put the final touches to the expanded terminal with 7500sq m of land cleared, paved and painted.
Project manager Jonathon Deaker said, in a statement, the terminal near the wharf was a high-value site for the company.
‘‘Being so close to the wharf makes a real difference to how efficiently we can operate and the additional capacity will support the growing demands on the site,’’ he said.
The new area providing about 250 additional ground slots has closer access to container vessels for quicker handling.
The upgrade improves vehicle movements through the terminal to reduce congestion.
Previously the layout had a more complex route through the site.
