With its mixture of funny, bawdy and hedonistic texts taken from anonymous poets of the Middle Ages, twentieth century German composer Carl Orff created in Carmina Burana a choral work of powerful pagan sensuality and direct physical excitement.
The pulsating rhythms, colourful orchestration and dynamic choruses, contrasted with moments of sensuous innocence, have taken Carmina Burana into the world of 'pop classics', especially its opening chorus O Fortuna.
The work has also provided the backdrop for countless international adverts, and for the films Excalibur, Natural Born Killers and Badlands.
The soloists, Natasha Wilson, Henry Choo, and James Clayton, are some of New Zealand’s and Australia’s finest singers, and they will be joined by City Choir Dunedin, Southern Youth Choir and two Dunedin children's choirs.
Along with a full DSO there will be over 200 people on stage.
Conductor Marc Taddei is known for his charismatic and inspirational conducting, and he has been Orchestra Wellington’s Music Director since 2007.
Bizet’s two charming L’Arlésienne Suites consist of music selected from his incidental music for a play. Lyrical and spirited by turns, the melodies are rooted in Provençal folk songs and dances, yet have all the colour and drama associated with the composer of Carmen.
