His son M.C. Butterfield continued the legacy, and his sons Charles and Monty Butterfield launched Chasmont Finance in 1931 - the company title derived from their combined first names.
Monty’s children - Kay Sneddon, Roye Haugh, and Warwick Butterfield - have all been involved in the family business in management and governance roles. Chairman of the Board Kay married Geoff Sneddon, who was general manager of Butterfields and also ran Chasmont Finance.
Being a ‘‘friendly firm’’ is a long-held Butterfields value that is still believed in.
The company was a Southern Hemisphere pioneer of hire purchase during the Great Depression, enabling customers to pay goods off over a longer period during those tough years. When Charles and Monty began Chasmont Finance, they recognised that they could improve the lifestyles and standard of living of their customers.
The principles forged during those early years remain in place at Chasmont Finance - and they still offer hire purchase options though a number of well known Dunedin businesses.
