Juliana at Daffodil House whilst receiving treatment gave her the support, peace, comfort and strength to face each day with confidence.
As the Cancer Society’s most significant annual appeal, Daffodil Day donations are vital to providing a wide range of supportive care services for people with cancer and their loved ones in Otago and Southland.
“Every day 60 New Zealanders will hear the words ‘you have cancer’. The Cancer Society needs your support to help reduce the incidence and impact of cancer. We receive no Government funding and offer our services for free. Every dollar raised stays right here in Otago and Southland helping people affected by cancer,” says Rachael Hart, CEO, Cancer Society Otago and Southland.
In the past year, the Cancer Society assisted 1257 people and their families, providing individualised support, help accessing forms and services, and information. It helped 278 women who has lost one or both their breasts with prosthetic services and facilitated over 207 workshops and group sessions.
It also continued to provide free accommodation in its Daffodil House – an eleven bedroom home-away-from-home for people who have to travel from around the region to Dunedin for treatment. One Daffodil House resident, Juliana Costa Fernades said, “Staying at Daffodil House whilst receiving treatment away from my home and loved ones gave me the support, peace, comfort and strength to face each day with confidence.”
As well as supporting those affected by cancer, the Cancer Society wants to create a future with less cancer.
The Fresh Air Pilot Project helped establish 46 smoke-free cafes, restaurants and bars in Otago and Southland. Ninety-nine schools are now Sun-Smart accredited, which means that 16,609 children are reducing the risk of UV-related cancers in Otago and Southland.
In the past year, the Otago and Southland Division of the Cancer Society has invested more than $90,000 towards cancer research, including at the University of Otago.
The Cancer Society is proud of what it achieves, but as the demand for assistance increases, your help is required so it can create a better future.
Please support the Cancer Society on Friday, 30 August for its annual Daffodil Day appeal.
