In 1997 the New Zealand Historic Places Trust took a series of photos of the interior features of the former chief post office.
In 2000, branch manager Paul Thompson expressed concern publicly over the fate of internal fittings which were stripped from the building without the trust's knowledge.
The owner during that period, Singapore businessman George Wuu, told the ODT in 2000 no heritage items were removed.
The ODT understands most of the interior fittings of the post office were sold and some now feature in other Otago buildings.
