April in Dunedin was warm, dry and sunny

Official April weather figures have confirmed Otago enjoyed a warm, dry and sunny month.

Niwa's national climate summary shows Dunedin was the driest of New Zealand's six main centres but lost out on the sunniest title to Christchurch, while Wellington was the wettest and cloudiest.

Although Dunedin had its sunniest April on record with 184 hours, it had the second-lowest sunshine hours of the main centres, above only Wellington's 167 hours.

Despite the rainfall on the last day of the month, Dunedin's Musselburgh station recorded only 20mm for the month, making it the second-lowest rainfall recorded in April since 1918.

The cold southerly on the last day did create some records of its own, with Dunedin airport recording its lowest extreme maximum temperature of 7.5degC, Dunedin its fourth lowest at 7.8degC, Balclutha its fourth-lowest at 8.4degC and Nugget Point its lowest at 6degC.

Lauder, near Alexandra, recorded its second-highest wind gust of 104kmh on April 29.
