Access to the seaside community of Long Beach was temporarily closed on Saturday morning after heavy rain caused a 15m slip near the intersection of Mihiwaka Rd and Driver St.

About 12 properties were inundated with water and houses were at risk of flooding.

The Port Chalmers Fire Service evacuated people from two Long Beach properties and advised other residents to consider evacuation because of possible difficulties in reaching them if the slip got worse.

Many residents decided to leave voluntarily.

However, Mihiwaka Rd resident Jan Mitchell decided to stay.

She had been in the community for more than 50 years and said she had never seen conditions so bad.

Floodwater was within 10cm of flowing into her house on Saturday morning and she was faced with the dilemma of leaving or staying to try to protect her property.

"I've been putting valuables up higher. But there's really nothing you can do. I'll just wait until high tide and see what happens."

High tide arrived at 4pm and earlier concerns about Drivers Creek compounding the flooding in Long Beach were not realised.

The main road into Long Beach was reopened by 5pm Saturday.
