Dunedin police are warning people to be vigilant about people purporting to be fundraising door-to-door for charity.

Senior Sergeant Kelvin Lloyd said the Otago Community Hospice had contacted police after reports of a person selling Christmas cards for the organisation.

The hospice was unaware of anyone selling cards door-to-door and Snr Sgt Lloyd advised people to be wary and to check credentials before making any donations.

It was unclear how widespread the problem was.
