The St Kilda Brass Bandits, a smaller version of the St Kilda Brass Band, will hit towns from Haast to Blackball from today.

Band committee and playing member John McAdam said the 12 musicians planned to get the band and the music ''right out there in the public''.

Smaller versions of the band, with closer to 10 members instead of the usual 28, meant it was easier to get about, and to fit into a smaller venues.

Venues would include Haast and Franz Josef Glacier schools, which had 11 and nine pupils respectively.

As well, its playlist included less traditional songs for a brass band, such as Wrecking Ball, by Miley Cyrus.

The Bandits were also taking some of their more unusual instruments, having experimented recently with road cones and glass music-making devices.

Dr McAdam said it was the first time the band had toured the West Coast.

"The whole idea was to take it to people who haven't got it.

"There's been a really exciting buy-in by the Coast people.''

With plenty of University of Otago students and graduates, the band had managed to get the university to fund its T-shirts and the West Coast Community Trust was also helping with accommodation costs.
