Trestle tables once full of books were standing nearly empty by the end of Dunedin City Library's Barking Mad Book Sale yesterday.
The sale lets the library clear its shelves to make way for new books and gives readers a chance at a bargain.
Library head of collection services Linda Geddes said there was very little left by 4pm and the uptake had been better than the previous year.
"It's been really well attended."
It was estimated about 30,000 to 40,000 books were on sale and those left would either go to the Regent Book Sale or the recyclers.
The funds raised would go into the collections budget for the library.
It was hoped to exceed last year's $16,000, she said.
