A 32-year-old Dunedin man made a policeman's job very easy when he was caught allegedly trying to steal tyres from a car.

The incident occurred in Cumberland St about midnight on Friday, Senior Sergeant Brian Benn said.

After stealing the battery and radiator cap, the man had attempted to take the tyres and was in the process of jacking up the car when the jack slipped and trapped his hand.

He stayed that way for about 20 minutes before a passing policeman noticed him and he was arrested.

"This guy should get a new career," Snr Sgt Benn said.

No medical treatment was required and he will appear in the Dunedin District Court this week charged with theft from a vehicle.
