Company now employs staff of stadium trust

The company set up to run the Forsyth Barr Stadium and other Dunedin City Council-owned venues has taken over as employer all staff who have in the past been employed by the Carisbrook Stadium Trust.

In a move to clarify the roles of the Dunedin Venues Management Ltd and the Carisbrook Stadium Trust, Dunedin Mayor Peter Chin said the roles of the two organisations had "evolved".

The clarification follows an annual revision of the service level agreement between the council and the trust.

Mr Chin said the community wanted information on such matters.

With the situation with Venues Management Ltd recently "re-jigged", it was necessary for the roles to be re-defined, so both organisations could work properly.

The council recently provided Venues Management with a $2.4 million budget to do its work.

Mr Chin said the changes meant it now employed stadium development director Darren Burden and commercial manager Guy Hedderwick.

The trust had the ongoing responsibility for the construction of the stadium on time, on budget and fit for purpose in accordance with the Hawkins construction contract, Mr Chin said.

"The effect of this is that the [trust] is responsible for ensuring that the stadium is ready to be handed over on August 1, 2011, and that it is a tested, functioning stadium by that date.

"The [trust] will continue to operate as a charitable trust to solicit and receive donations and distribute them in accordance with the purposes of its trust deed.

"On the other hand, Dunedin Venues Management Ltd now has responsibility for ensuring that there is a series of events booked to use its facilities after the completed stadium is handed over by the [trust] following commissioning trials."

That meant promoting and marketing the stadium, operating it, organising contracts with suppliers of food, beverage, and merchandise, selling sponsorship, seating products and exploring "every other revenue earning opportunity".
