Gang members deny assault charges

Several Black Power members and associates have denied charges over two violent incidents in Dunedin.

Six men and one woman have been charged after two alleged assaults in the central city in June.

Two patched members and two associates were charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after a 25-year-old was knocked unconscious and attacked outside the Dunedin Casino in High St on June 25.

Two of the trio were then allegedly involved in a gang altercation, aided by three other gang members, in Stafford St on June 28.

The victims were a former gang member and a member of a rival gang, police said.

During the incident, a car allegedly was rammed by Mangu Kaha members, ending up on the footpath, and a gang member used a patu - a traditional Maori club - in the assault.

Those accused face charges of assault with intent to injure and assault with a weapon.

Albert Victor Epere (50) appeared before the Dunedin District Court this afternoon and pleaded not guilty to crimes involving the patu.

Billy Steven Cooper (26), who has been charged in relation to both incidents as well as facing other charges, took a similar stance.

Poutokomanawa Bubba Matiu Hapi (25) previously pleaded not guilty to involvement in both incidents, as did Shikarna Renata Epere (23), who faces serious violence charges from the flashpoint outside the casino.

All four will be back in court at the end of September.

A 49-year-old and two 21-year-old men have yet to enter pleas to charges against them.
