'Awful stench' leads to carcass pile

Scott Weatherall was enjoying a bike ride in Brighton on Monday.

That was until the Saddle Hill Community Board chairman came across the carcasses of more than 30 animals and fish.

"I was out mountain-biking on Big Stone Rd, and smelt this awful stench."

While he was aware the occasional carcass had been left in the area before, the sheer amount left this week shocked him.

"There would have been two to three deer, three pigs, 20 to 30 blue cod head and bodies and six ducks.

"I was pretty frustrated. It’s gutting that people have done this."

The Dunedin City Council sent contractors to get rid of the mess the next morning, and their speed in clearing the site was impressive, Mr Weatherall said.

"I’d say a number of people went out over the weekend and didn’t think before they dumped their mess."

Mr Weatherall said hunters needed to think before they went out, and plan ahead when it came to disposing of their waste.

"It just takes some simple planning and thinking ahead. This sort of thing just does not need to happen.

"I’m a hunter myself but this sort of thing gives every one of us a bad name."

Agree. Hunters always have some that think its part of the macho image to dump carcasses in public spots. Their other offensive action that they do is parade their catch on the back of utes and such, sometimes in baking sun. Love of the bush and environment seems to die once they have their catch and then some hunters seem to want do a show and tell like primary school kids.

Disgusting abuse of the freedoms we are given. Makes the name of good hunters look bad.

The person(s) who did this are not HUNTERS ... they're just D*Heads who love to kill animals.

Most of the species mentioned are considered pests in NZ and are often targeted due to the destruction the cause in our forests and farms, even hunters working for DoC to cull the wapiti heards in the Fiordland area, do't just chuck the meat away, they're now mincing it up and giving ite to food banks (lucky recipients) ... all game animals can be eaten and a lot tastier compared with farmed animals.

It's actually quite interesting to look at what has been dumped, it looks like it was meant for a special occasion catering for quite a lot of people ...

I certainly hope the Police and other organisations like DoC, Fish & Game and the public, will be able to catch those responseable and, if nothing else, name them and shame them.
