Natures Wonders thieves caught on video

A gang of thieves who raided an Otago Peninsula tourism venture this week were captured on CCTV, and it was only a matter of time before police caught them, the business owner said.

Natures Wonders owner Perry Reid said at least three men were captured on various cameras as their car wound its way up Harington Pt Rd to his Taiaroa Head business.

The men's faces were caught by CCTV cameras at the business when they broke in through an office window and stole hundreds of dollars worth of stock and cash from the till.

"This was absolutely thought out and targeted but I don't think they realised how much they've been videoed, because there's cameras all round the headland and the Albatross Centre, and all round our place."

Little cash was kept on site, apart from a float in the till, Mr Reid said.

"My honest feeling is the risk they've taken for the reward is not worth it."

"I'm pretty sure the police will be knocking on their door in the not-too-distant future."

Police urged Gladstone Rd residents to keep an eye out for suspicious activity after burglaries in the area. Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen, of Dunedin, said a property in that street had its windows smashed but with no signs of entry.

That followed two other burglaries at the north end of the road.

A man found wandering home in Dunedin this week admitted crashing his ute earlier and was found to still be drunk, blowing three times the legal drink-driving limit, police said.

Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen, of Dunedin, said the man was found walking home in Taieri Rd after his Toyota Hilux crashed into two parked vehicles.

The man admitted the crash and recorded a breath-alcohol reading of 753mcg, more than three times the legal limit of 250mcg.
