Mistake to call Albany St project a ‘cycleway’

Calling Dunedin’s central city transport project a cycleway in tender documents was a mistake, the city council says.

The project’s tender documents first appeared online on Tuesday, under the title "Albany Street Cycleway".

Dunedin Mayor Jules Radich said the title described the project well, "which avoids confusion".

However, Dunedin City Council transport group manager Jeanine Benson said it was not intentional.

"The reference to the project as the Albany St cycleway is a mistake and will be corrected.

"The name of the project remains the Albany Street Connection and it seeks to deliver a range of improvements, including a cycleway," she said.

The project’s 2022 business case was also titled "Albany Street Cycleway".

Cr Lee Vandervis said the name change was to hide the fact that the project was "always a cycleway".

Ms Benson’s correction was "just misleading spin", he said.

"To correct the ‘mistake’, staff should change the name to the Albany Street Cycleway and Parking-loss Project."

Several councillors disputed characterising the project as a cycleway during last month’s council meeting, when they voted to proceed with the project.

Cr Steve Walker said depiction of the project as a cycleway was unhelpful.

"It's about safety, convenience, the disabled community, the bus service, it's about putting people first."

Cr Cherry Lucas agreed, "it's about parking and I think this has been forgotten".

Cr Christine Garey said the project was about improving cyclist safety and connecting existing cycling infrastructure and Cr David Benson-Pope described it as a "combination of urban improvements to [the University of Otago] campus".
