Two Dunedin school pupils have been selected for a ''once-in-a-lifetime'' trip to the subantarctic Auckland Islands through the Sir Peter Blake Trust.

Aidan Braid (17), of Logan Park High School, and Sam Kilsby (16), of Otago Boys' High School, were two of only 14 pupils selected for the Young Blake Expedition after impressing with their knowledge, passion and expertise on the environment, conservation and science.

They were chosen from more than 100 applicants who attended the trust's Young Enviroleaders' Forum.

Aidan said the trip would be an incredible experience and he was ''over the moon'' about his selection.

''I was ecstatic when I got the phone call.

''I've done a lot of environmental work for my school. They [the trust] said I stood out [and] have great leadership skills.''

Sam was excited about the prospect of doing something he had never experienced before.

''I think I was very lucky to get chosen.

''There were lots of great applicants. It's going to be a great ... experience.''

Sam was thankful to Otago Boys' for giving him an environmental role which helped in his selection.

The pupils would board a navy frigate in February next year and spend 14 days experiencing ship life, working with scientists and on conservation projects.

The voyage to reach the uninhabited islands would take four days from Devonport.

The boys needed to raise $1000 each for the trip.

Sir Peter Blake Trust environmental programme director Hannah Prior said the experience would shape the pupils' futures.

''They ... will come back champions for a unique and special part of New Zealand's environment,'' she said.

''They will be totally out of their comfort zone and challenged in ways theydidn't imagine.

''[It] will ... give them the skills and knowledge to help lead environmental projects.''
