Fundraising for pool tops $3.2m ‘trigger’

A $3.2 million fundraising ‘‘trigger’’ point to build a new aquatic facility in Mosgiel has been surpassed.

But the trust behind the project says it will continue its community fundraising push until Christmas.

Taieri Community Facilities Trust chairwoman Irene Mosley said some big donations and people pledging $500 or more to become ‘‘pool builders’’ pushed the fundraising tally beyond its $3.2 million fundraising trigger point last week.

‘‘The trigger is the minimum we had to raise for the Dunedin City Council to take us seriously.’’

Now the trigger had been hit, the trust planned to apply for grants to raise another $1 million.

Any money given by the public between now and Christmas would go into a new facility.

The trust would stop actively fundraising after Christmas but public donations would continue to be accepted.

‘‘Mosgiel has a reputation for punching above its weight when it comes to community projects and that’s what we were relying on, as well as a lot of hard work ’’

Council parks and recreation group manager Robert West said he had been told the trust had reached the fundraising target and he was ‘‘very pleased’’.

The next step for the council would be reporting the news at a council meeting next year to progress the project.
