Garage gutted, house saved from Belleknowes blaze

A Dunedin garage has been gutted but a house has been saved thanks to the ‘‘very, very brave firefighters’’ who rushed to contain a roaring blaze at a Belleknowes property.

Crews from the Roslyn, St Kilda, Dunedin and Lookout Point stations attended the garage fire in Gamma St, just before 2pm yesterday.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said the garage was attached to the home and was extensively damaged.

The home, however, was relatively undamaged.

On arrival, the fire was ‘‘well ablaze’’ and was brought under control within the hour.

Firefighters remained on the scene into the evening to dampen down any hotspots.
