English comedian Simon Clayton is set to hit it out of the park, but not on his own yet.

The Buckinghamshire comedian will perform in the Dunedin Fringe Festival show The International Comedy Club with his Irish wife Mary Bourke tonight.

Since starting comedy as part of a double act about 20 years ago he had compered shows, appeared in comedy line-ups but never done a solo show, he said.

"I’m too scared."

He was contemplating writing a solo show and returning to the Dunedin Fringe next year for his first solo show.

The appeal of performing in New Zealand was being able to talk about his favourite sport.

"Fat men like cricket because it’s the only sport where you stop for lunch and tea."

In New Zealand, he could also talk about one of his favourite players, Lance Cairns.

He admired Cairns because he was a "big fella" who hit the ball out of the park so he didn’t have to run.

He also liked him because he was a New Zealander.

"I’ve played cricket with Kiwis and I’ve found them really charming people who like a laugh — I’ve always seen Kiwis as what Australians could be."
