The vital contribution of volunteers, partner organisations and funders was celebrated by Otago Neighbourhood Support last week.

The luncheon and awards ceremony, held at Dunedin Central Police Station on September 20, also celebrated more than 20 years of Neighbourhood Support in Otago.

ONS regional co-ordinator Lois Scott-Muir told the gathering the organisation would not exist without the ongoing contribution made by New Zealand Police, Dunedin City Council, the volunteers and funders.

"The awards are a small thank you to people and partners who have been there with us from the start,'' Mrs Scott-Muir said.

City councillor David Benson-Pope, Neighbourhood Support New Zealand chief executive Tess Casey, community adviser Kelsey Scarr, Sergeant John Hedges, of Dunedin police, and ONS chairwoman Pat Tutty presented the awards.

The recipients included long-serving ONS trust members, including former chairman Andy Redfearn, treasurer Andrew Borthwick, current chairwoman Pat Tutty and trustees Marie Sutherland and Colin Lind.

Also acknowledged for their efforts were Department of Internal Affairs Otago/Southland regional services manager Martin Schievink, Senior Constable Brendan Thomson and Emergency Management Otago officer (Dunedin) Glenn Mitchell.

On behalf of the city, Cr Benson-Pope thanked ONS for its continued work and emphasised the need for neighbours and neighbourhoods to communicate and connect with one another.
