Some operations are being postponed at Dunedin Hospital because of the water contamination scare, the Southern District Health Board said yesterday.
Acute surgery was going ahead, but some elective procedures had to be postponed.
No other clinical services were affected.
SDHB incident controller Jenny Hanson praised staff for their handling of the situation.
''Southern DHB staff are stellar in their response to this incident and are getting on with the business of looking after patients,'' she said in a statement.
The board is operating its emergency operations centre to co-ordinate its response.
The hospital's water supply was coming from a tanker and bottled water.
Public Health South medical officer of health Dr Keith Reid said while residents in affected areas should not consume tap water, it was fine for bathing and showering.
There had been no increase in gastroenteritis in the Dunedin area.
The board was working closely with the Dunedin City Council and other agencies.
