Historian shoring up sister links

Otago Settlers Museum curator and historian Sean Brosnahan will attend an international workshop in Edinburgh next month as the museum continues to build closer links with Dunedin's Scottish sister city.

Mr Brosnahan, whose participation has been funded by Scottish authorities, will give a historical talk at the Edinburgh-based workshop.

Titled "Wha Bears a Blade for Scotland?", the Royal Society of Edinburgh-supported research gathering will explore the development of "Scottish diasporic military identities" among Scottish immigrants, from about 1880 to the present day.

The workshop will explore the meaning of military Scottishness among the diaspora, focusing on mass migrations to the New World of Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa.

The workshop is intended to be the first step in a wider project, which encompasses helping to plan of a major international collaborative exhibition on Scotland's military traditions, to be held at the National Museum of Scotland in 2014.

Last year, Settlers Museum director Linda Wigley visited the Scottish capital, including the city's National Museum of Scotland.
