Toitu has helped realise a Dunedin boy's Christmas wish by organising a private meeting with Santa and he has not stopped smiling since.

Luca Brook (2), who has a form of autism, was able to meet the jolly philanthropist at the settlers museum before it opened on Friday.

Mother Dani Garland said she had tried to take her son to the museum's Santa meetings and Pixie Town previously.

However, whenever they entered he became spooked by the crowds.

''With the loud noises and lights it just sets him off and he just wants to be out of there.''

He had always been interested in Santa, she said.

''We put out food for the reindeer and snacks for Santa. He loves lights and decorating the tree and taking it all down at the end.''

She emailed Toitu explaining the situation and asked if there was an alternative.

She told staff how Luca loved Santa, but was never able to meet him.

''I thought if they would even tell me the quietest time of day that'd be fine.''

Staff replied and the family was told to come in at 9.30am before the museum opened, so Luca could have have a private meeting with the big man in red.

When they met, Luca's face ''lit up'', she said.

''He smiled as soon as he saw him. He was so excited. He was busy touching Santa's nose and clothes.''

Luca did not speak as he was mostly non-verbal.

However, he was ''listening to everything'' Santa said.

Before they left, the photographer insisted they get the photos for free.

''When we were outside afterwards he was laughing and clapping his hands.''

She thought what staff did for Luca was ''really great''.

''It was amazing, because most places don't cater to kids like him.''
