Naming of roads around stadium next month

Roads around the Forsyth Barr Stadium will be named next month, after public consultation generated only a muted response.

Councillors at this week's infrastructure services committee meeting voted to approve new road names suggested at its March meeting, after receiving just three responses to a call for submissions.

The new section of State Highway 88 would be named as part of Ravensbourne Rd, a report by council land information team leader Rob Garrett said.

Existing stretches of Union St and Ravensbourne Rd, near Logan Park, up to the newly completed roundabout, would be renamed as an extension of Anzac Ave.

A new road between Parry St and Magnet St would be named Neptune St, after the World War 2 cruiser with Otago links.

Parry St's name would remain between Anzac Ave and Minerva St, but elsewhere would become Gambia St, after another of the World War 2-era cruisers with Otago links.

Three property owners required to change their physical addresses as a result of the changes had been contacted, but only one - Blackhead Quarry Ltd - had made a submission and supported the changes, Mr Garrett said.

A member of the public also sent a list of suggestions "that could be interpreted as a political commentary" which had not been considered, he said.

A member of the public also submitted to last month's annual plan hearings, supporting the changes, he said.

The decisions required full council approval on June 27, and would then be implemented to coincide with the opening of the new section of SH88 next month, he said.
