New musical director for St Paul's

St Paul's Cathedral will be hoping for some overdue harmony with the appointment of its latest musical director.

George Chittenden was appointed to the position by the Dean of Dunedin, the Very Rev Dr Trevor James, yesterday.

Mr Chittenden (28) is artist in residence and assistant organist at Christ Church Cathedral, in Hartford, Connecticut, United States.

He arrives in Dunedin next week and will take up his position later this month.

"We are blessed by the depth of skill and commitment shown by our musicians. I am sure that with George's arrival, they will build on these strengths and that we will see vigorous new growth in our music," Dr James said yesterday.

Mr Chittenden describes himself on his website as "a keen traveller, a historian and a committed poker player and a fan of beer".

He replaces former-musical director David Burchell, who resigned in February after allegations of "bullying" and "ongoing disagreement".

The previous St Paul's Cathedral musical director, Dr Raymond White, was controversially dismissed from the post in 1998.

He had been director of music and choirmaster at St Paul's for 21 years when he was sacked by Dean Jonathan Kirkpatrick.

Kirkpatrick, who was the 10th dean of St Paul's, from 1996 to 2001, was jailed for three years and two months in Auckland on Thursday after being convicted of stealing $665,000 from his employer, the Auckland University of Technology.
