Nine Dunedin burglary arrests in two days

Dunedin police, with help from the Dunedin public, have caught nine alleged burglars in two nights this week.

Early on Tuesday, four men were apprehended after Otago Marine in Kaikorai Valley Rd was burgled.

Another five men were arrested about 1am yesterday after car yards in Kaikorai Valley Rd and Portsmouth Dr were burgled.

Senior Sergeant Craig Brown said the arrests were work well done by police staff, but would have been impossible without help from the public.

"Both catches were the result of good work by people who were vigilant in obtaining information we could follow up."

In both cases, a member of the public saw suspicious activity, noted details of a car leaving the scene and called police.

In Tuesday's burglary, water-skis and petrol were taken from Otago Marine.

Yesterday cars were interfered with at Carbase in Kaikorai Valley Rd and at Turners in Portsmouth Dr, while boats were also interfered with and petrol taken from Otago Marine.

Five males aged between 17 and 21 were arrested an hour later and charged with burglary.

All nine men have been remanded to appear in the Dunedin District Court over the next few weeks.

Initial inquiries did not suggest the burglaries were related, Snr Sgt Brown said.
