Mathematics teachers at Kaikorai Valley College in Dunedin have come up with a clever way to make 900 go into 50.

Staff and pupils at the college flocked to the playing field yesterday to form a huge number 50 as part of the school's 50th reunion celebrations this week.

By measuring the dimensions of an average Kaikorai Valley College pupil, the maths department calculated the numbers would have to be 20m high and 10m wide to fit all of the pupils and staff.

Principal Phillip Craigie said there was a moment of apprehension as the school's 900 pupils and staff lined up at the side of the field wondering if they would all fit.

Fortunately, the calculations were correct and all looked skyward as an aerial photograph was taken.

Mr Craigie said the giant 50 was a way for the present pupils of the school to acknowledge the reunion.

Celebrations will begin this weekend, with the official opening on Friday evening in the Dunedin Town Hall.

During a formal dinner in the town hall on Saturday night, 18 ‘‘Living Legends'' awards will be presented to staff who have given 25 years service to the school.

Celebrations will conclude with a cabaret in the town hall on Sunday evening.
