University of Otago law students Alex Boock and Rob Clarke have won an international client-interviewing contest in Dublin, the first time a team from Otago has won the annual event.

New Zealand law student teams have built a formidable record in the Brown-Mosten International Client Counselling Competition in the past 10 years, winning it five times, as well as gaining a second place and two third-place finishes.

Mr Boock (25), a fourth-year student, who returned to Dunedin this week, was "absolutely stoked" with the win.

Mr Boock said New Zealand team coach Associate Prof Selene Mize, of the Otago Law School, had provided crucial help in enabling the team to take the "massive step" up to the higher performance level required for such high-stress international competition.

Twenty-two teams from throughout the world recently competed in Dublin, and two-person teams from China and Germany took second-equal place.

Thorough legal preparation, active listening and being able to put clients at their ease had contributed to the success, he said.

Mr Clarke, who is now undertaking his professional law studies in Auckland, said good team work had also held the key in the "nerve-racking" final.

As a judging panel observed, teams had to offer practical and legally sound advice, given the scenario of a male nurse wishing to warn about safety concerns arising from drug-taking by a hospital surgeon.

The two Otago students won the right to represent New Zealand after winning an earlier New Zealand contest last August, and had also won a client-interviewing contest in Australia in July.
