OUSA election muted

A lack of nominations means there will only be competitive elections for three out of 10 positions on Otago University Student's Association's (OUSA) executive, with the other positions attracting either one or no candidates.

Elections for six of the 10 positions on next year's executive attracted only one candidate, meaning the candidates would find themselves automatic selections to the executive and there would have to be a by-election for the postgraduate students officer role, which attracted no candidates.

OUSA president Logan Edgar said the lack of nominations for positions apart from president, which attracted six nominations, was "a shame".

"I guess that's testament to the fact that the president's role is obviously the spokesperson for the organisation and gets seen more publicly."

Students perhaps did not hear enough about the importance of the rest of the executive who "put in the hard yards behind closed doors", he said.

However, he said the level of interest in the president's role was a positive and he hoped a "competitive" campaign would lead to a good voter turnout.

Among the six students vying for the role of president was Logan's brother Ryan Edgar who Logan said ran of "his own accord" and not as a result of his encouragement.

Mr Edgar blamed a lack of nominations for last year's elections on the impending introduction of Voluntary Student Membership.

Voting will be held from 9am next Monday until 4pm next Friday, with results announced later that day.

The nominations are.- President: Ryan Edgar, Zac Gawn, Francisco Hernandez, Sam Sinclair, Daniel Stride, Caleb Wicks. Administrative vice-president: Zac Gawn, Mat Jordan. Finance and services officer: Lucy Gaudin. Education officer: Mat Jordan, Daniel Stride, Jordan Taylor. Welfare officer: Francisco Hernandez. International students officer: Kamil Saisudein. Campaigns officer: Ruby Ann Sycamore-Smith. Recreation officer: Blake Luff. Colleges and communication officer: Pippa Benson.
