Dunedin police are seeking the aid of the public to track down whoever illegally chopped down a 10m poplar tree near Pine Hill School late last week.
‘‘This is a malicious act, outright vandalism,'' Senior Sergeant Mel Aitken, of Dunedin, said.
The 30-cm-wide tree was cut down on Friday night or Saturday morning, using a tomahawk or similar cutting tool, and was left where it fell.
Anyone who had seen any suspicious behaviour in the area was asked to contact the police.
