Plenty of chances for fans to get up close to RWC teams

Fans will have multiple opportunities to get up close to visiting Rugby World Cup teams playing in Dunedin at public training sessions, official welcomes and civic receptions.

Three of the six teams playing RWC matches in Dunedin will hold training sessions which will be open to the public.

Dunedin City Council RWC co-ordinator Kim Newman said England would hold its only public training session in Dunedin, at Carisbrook on September 20, to acknowledge the support of locals who are hosting them for three weeks.

The time of the training would be confirmed once the team arrived.

Romania would hold four public training sessions at the University Oval, daily from September 19 to 22, from 10am until noon.

Italy would also hold an open training session at the University Oval, on September 29 from 3pm until 5pm.

However, the training sessions were not the only times fans could see the teams.

Argentina was being given a welcome at Dunedin Airport on September 1, at 8.05pm, and both England and Argentina were being hosted at formal civic welcome ceremonies as Dunedin was their first stop in the tournament.

The ceremonies - Argentina on September 4 at noon, and England on September 6 at 5.30pm - would be held at the the Dunedin Town Hall and would be open to the public.

There might be other opportunities for the public to see and interact with the teams, but they would be announced after teams arrived, Ms Newman said.
