Police believe they've cracked the case of the fossilised dinosaur egg stolen from Otago Museum on Tuesday.

Security footage from Dunedin central police station, where the egg was returned at an unattended counter yesterday morning, and from the museum led police to believe it was an Invercargill man, Senior Sergeant Bruce Ross said.

Invercargill police had been informed, and would talk to the man.

Staff noticed the fossil missing from the Dunedin museum's ground-floor shop.

The hadrosaur egg was 145 million to 65 million years old and valued at $1700.
