Police halt search for missing man

Police have suspended their search for a missing Dunedin man.

Senior Sergeant Brian Benn said a vehicle belonging to Michael John Beyer was located at a car park at Taiaroa Head.

Police had conducted extensive Land and Marine searches in the past fortnight, and there had been no sightings or activity on his bank account or cellphone.

Earlier this week, police and search-and-rescue managers met the family and made a joint decision to suspend the search, he said.

"If any new information comes to hand we will resume the search."

The matter has now been referred to the coroner.

Tangi Russell, of the Otakou Runanga, said a rahui was put in place for the headlands area which would last for a fortnight.

The rahui prohibits the gathering of kaimoana in the declared area.
