Police are investigating after personal property was torched at the Otago Boys' High School grandstand on Tuesday night.

The fire was seen by passers-by about 9.40pm and firefighters promptly extinguished it before any damage was caused to the grandstand.

''We were lucky - we were very lucky,'' rector Richard Hall said yesterday in reaction to the event.

The fire was lit in the grandstand fuelled by sports gear left by pupils.

''We will be working with police and co-operating with them to hopefully find the culprit,'' Mr Hall said.

Dunedin police (03) 471-4800, Crimestoppers 0800 555-111.
