Fewer residential properties changed hands in Dunedin last month compared with the same time last year, but the median price rose 8%, according to the latest Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) figures.
Last month, the median price was $243,000 in Dunedin, with 139 properties sold, compared with $225,000 and 171 properties in June 2009.
In May, 154 properties changed hands, at a median price of $241,250.
Otago Central's median price fell 12.6%, to $349,500, compared with June 2009, where 42 properties sold, compared with 39 in the same month last year.
In Queenstown, the median was up 8.7% to $500,000 last month, compared with the same time last year.
A similar number of properties changed hands - 43, compared with 41.
Sales volumes were down in South Otago at 10 last month, compared with 19 in June 2009.
The median price was up 8.4%, to $173,500.
In East Otago, there were four sales last month, compared with seven the year before.
The median price was up 4.7% to $230,250.
In North Otago, 29 properties sold last month, compared with 35 the previous June.
The median price fell 5%, to $190,000.
Nationally, the median rose 3.7% to $352,500, the highest June figure on record.
REINZ president Peter McDonald said the predicted "post-Budget blues" had not eventuated.
"What we have is a genuine need rather than a speculative market, with people seeking and buying homes to meet their own needs."
