Public Library talks tell of bush lifestyle

Two years after her husband Robert Long came to Dunedin to share his story with Dunedin listeners, Catherine Stewart is doing the same.

Mr Long's book A Life of Gorge River, which tells the story of how he dropped out of medical school in 1980 to live in remote South Westland hut two days' walk south of Haast, became an unexpected bestseller when it was published in 2010.

He made two trips to Dunedin that year to speak to Dunedin Public Libraries audiences.

Now, Catherine Stewart has published her story, titled A Wife on Gorge River, about meeting Robert, moving to Westland in 1990 and raising and schooling their two children, now aged 20 and 17.

She will speak at the Dunedin City Library on September 24.

Mr Long's two talks attracted about 400 people and Dunedin Public Libraries marketing co-ordinator Lynette Hartgill said she expected Ms Stewart's talk would be just as popular.

Bookings were encouraged.
