Artworks created by St Leonard's School pupils are set to take to the street in the annual West Harbour Arts Week parade.

Artist-in-residence Jessica Latton, of Ake Ake Theatre Company, said four West Harbour education providers - St Leonard's School, Purakaunui School, Koputai Early Childhood Centre and Port Chalmers Kindergarten - would join Port Chalmers School in its annual arts week from Monday.

The children's artworks would be paraded in Port Chalmers next Sunday, she said.

''The port comes to a standstill for the parade every year,'' she said.

At noon, about 100 children would carry their artworks from the Port Chalmers Town Hall to Port Chalmers School and then act in a ''street theatre'' performance, Guardians of the Otago Harbour.

The preschool children would be ''little volcanic spirits or fireflies''.

''This gives them lots of fun movement and costume options.''

The pupils' research for the performance would include studying birdlife in West Harbour.

Science and research-gathering skills would be ''turned into poetry and choreographic movement''.
