They moved to Skerries St with their young children about 22 years ago, to get away from traffic and enjoy the rural surroundings.
Mr and Mrs Young both grew up in Southland and moved to Outram about 1987.
Their Skerries St property offered an uninterrupted view of the river and a bit more peace and quiet than what they had been dealing with.
''When we first moved to Outram we were right beside quite a busy road and the cul-de-sac meant there was no fear of vehicles racing past on the street or past your gate,'' Mr Young said.
They bought a house on a Skerries St section which was slightly larger than a quarter acre (0.1ha).
Mr Young said they were not hemmed in by neighbours, which was another attraction of the property.
''We're right on the river bank, really. We've got no neighbours facing the north, so it's a nice rural feeling.
''There's always sheep and what not floating around on the grass.''
''There were opportunities for our kids to play cricket at the end of the street and all sorts of other things.''
Mr Young, assistant coach to the Otago rugby team, also enjoyed living in Outram because it was removed from his working environment in central Dunedin.
''I travel in and out each day and it's an opportunity to think about your day as you drive in, and driving home you unwind so by the time you get home you feel pretty good.
'' I like the rural connections with people and the wee micro climate we've got here.''
The Youngs also had a place in the Mackenzie Basin, but do not have any intention of moving from Outram any time soon.
''We love it here,'' Mr Young said.
''Everything's good - schooling and medical facilities. We've got everything here, really. It's pretty cool.''
